History
50 years young and still growing
Meals on Wheels originated in Britain during the Second World War assisting frail aged older people who wanted to stay in their own homes, but who needed help to do so.
In Australia, Meals on Wheels started in 1952 in South Melbourne. A lady on a tricycle delivered the meals. When it became too much for her, The Red Cross took over.
Meals on Wheels has come a long way since then and now has locally based Meals on Wheels services operating around Australia. State level Associations provide support, research, resources and advocacy on matters affecting Meals on Wheels services.
The Meals on Wheels Association Australia is not a parent body but the voice of Meals on Wheels representing the interests of member associations at a national level.
